UJAMAA developed the Claiborne Corridor Life History Project to record, document and permanently preserve the life histories of our iconic culture bearers, such as L. Jerome Smith, Freedom Rider and founder of Tremé’s Tamborine & Fan; George Rainey of the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, a Claiborne Corridor business-owner who was displaced by the elevated I-10 Expressway; Carol Bebelle, co-founder and Executive Director of the Ashé Cultural Arts Center; Marion Colbert, neighborhood cultural maven and Queen of the Banana Tree; and Sylvester Francis, community documentarian and founder of the Backstreet Museum.
